Founder’s Note

Throughout my career, I’ve advised multinational businesses, founders and internationally mobile individuals, with experience spanning international tax, financial services, fintech and digital assets.

My interest in US/UK cross-border tax became personal when I moved to the UK. I encountered many of the same questions my clients face — around investments, retirement accounts, business ownership and navigating two very different tax systems. While there were excellent advisers on both sides, I found it surprisingly difficult to find one person who could look across both systems and explain how all the pieces fit together.

That experience ultimately shaped Bates Baker.

Today, I focus on helping individuals, founders and businesses understand the full cross-border picture — identifying where the US and UK rules interact, where unexpected tax or reporting exposure can arise, and where planning opportunities exist.

Advice Before Compliance

Bates Baker is primarily an advisory practice. The focus is not simply on preparing another tax return — it is on understanding the decisions behind the numbers.

That can mean planning before an international move, structuring equity before it appreciates, understanding an investment before making it, or considering the tax consequences before a business enters a new market.

Where specialist legal, compliance or local-country support is required, we work alongside the client’s existing advisers or help coordinate the appropriate specialists.
